How This Income Tax Calculator Works
United States uses a progressive tax system with multiple brackets:
Taxable Income = Gross Income - Deductions
Tax = Sum of (Income in each bracket Γ Bracket rate)
How progressive taxation works:
- Your income is divided into chunks based on tax brackets
- Each chunk is taxed at its own rate (10%, 12%, 22%, etc.)
- Moving to a higher bracket only affects income ABOVE that threshold
- Your effective rate is always less than your marginal rate
The exact brackets and rates depend on your selected country. Each country has different income thresholds and tax rates, but the progressive principle remains the sameβhigher income portions are taxed at higher rates, while lower portions maintain lower rates.
Example Calculation
Let's calculate tax for a single filer earning $75,000:
- Gross Income: $75,000
- Standard Deduction: $14,600
- Taxable Income: $60,400
Tax calculation by bracket:
- 10% on first $11,600 = $1,160
- 12% on $11,600 to $47,150 ($35,550) = $4,266
- 22% on $47,150 to $60,400 ($13,250) = $2,915
Results:
- Total Federal Tax: $8,341
- Take Home (before state/FICA): $66,659
- Effective Tax Rate: 11.1%
- Marginal Tax Rate: 22%
Note: Even though you're "in the 22% bracket," you only pay 11.1% of your total income in federal tax.
